Garrett Kamps pretty much nails bike thieves here: "bike thieves are up there with cable providers and Red Sox fans on the list of the world's worst people, but until they make meth less delicious, we're going to have to deal with them. I think my personal strategy is the best: Ride a shitty bike."
He's got lots of other ideas as well (not all of which I agree with, for whatever the hell THAT's worth), and his essay's pretty entertaining.

He's right about bike thieves. I work 9 km from where I live, but I will not commute on my bike because I know it will be stolen. I also know a stolen bike is still cheaper than fuel, but I'd rather buy the fuel than let a thief have my bike.

Even if you lock your bike up well they'll just steal your derailleurs....
